IMPACT OF VIOLENCE AGAINST POLICE ON EMS PROVIDERS:

NEMSMA leaders were interested in what our members are doing, for our industry, in response to the increased violence against our law enforcement colleagues.

BALLISTIC VESTS FOR CAREGIVERS -

Almost 56% of the survey responders plan to provide caregivers ballistic vests in the next 12 months. Some are providing generic vests assigned to the ambulance or supervisor vehicle. Others are restricting ballistic vests to tactical medics or members of the rescue task force.

FIRST EMS SUPERVISOR CREDENTIAL EXAM ADMINISTERED

The first EMS Supervisor exam that counts towards the credential was administered on July 22nd during the Pinnacle EMS leadership conference in San Antonio.

Approximately 20 candidates attended a test preparation session delivered by Incoming NEMSMA President Vince Robbins and then took the 100 question multiple-choice exam. Much of the exam is scenario based, assessing the candidate’s ability to function as an EMS supervisor.

Mr. Robbins made this observation:

“This is an historic moment in modern day American EMS. For the first time, we have established a national standard of competency and credentialing for the entire range of EMS Officers; Supervising, Managing and Executive. NEMSMA has lead the way in creating detailed descriptions of the various educational and experiential requisites necessary for the three levels of EMS management, and a scientifically valid methodology to verify the attainment of these proficiencies by individuals.”

Doctor Doverspike, the test developer for Avesta, reported that the cutoff score was 70. “Given the expertise in the room, it was expected that each participant should pass the supervisor exam.  We look forward to getting a more realistic sample of true front-line supervisors (…with subsequent tests).”

The credentialing process includes an assessment of an education/experience portfolio provided by each candidate. Thank you to all who attended the test-prep course and congratulations to all test takers on passing the exam.
